Meet the 2022 Juanita J. Craft Artist Residency Recipients

Camika Spencer, Ebony Lewis, Jessica Bell and Linda Jones are the recipients of the South Dallas Cultural Center’s Juanita J. Craft Artist Residency for 2022. Spencer, Lewis, Bell and Jones are the third cohort of artists to participate in the neighborhood. art-based program.

The residency aims for artists to “contribute to the cultural and artistic impact of the South Dallas community.” The program encourages artists to approach their work from a multidisciplinary perspective, conducting engagement and research with community members as well as local organizations and institutions to help inform their work.

Spencer, Lewis and Bell will produce works in the field of visual arts. Jones’ project will draw on the disciplines of writing and performance art.

Junita J. Craft Residency alumnus Nitashia Johnson created The Beauty of South Dallas during her time with the program. His project told the story of South Dallas through images and stories of residents, small business owners and community leaders. Johnson was the inaugural recipient of the Juanita J. Craft Residency in 2020.

Inyang Essien, Glyneisha Johnson, Adriane McCray and Laura Neal were the recipients for 2021.

Each recipient receives a fee-based budget for their residency period. Artists have the option of determining the length of their residency. After completing their projects, artists will showcase their work to SDCC staff and community.

Spencer and Bell’s residency runs from August to September. Jones and Lewis’ residency begins in October and ends in December.
