Abstract Glass Sculptures Take Inspiration From The Natural World
For over 30 years, Australian artist Clare Belfrage has been creating exquisite blown glass sculptures inspired by the natural world. With rounded corners and soothing pastel hues, her uniquely shaped pieces are distinguished by the delicate patterns that drift across their organic forms. Each of these ethereal patterns is “drawn” with strips of glass and sanded down until it merges with the rest of the sculpture.
Grids made of gently curving white lines, circular slices and bands of different colors are just some of the ways she covers her sculptures. The mesmerizing planes contrast with the sheer simplicity of the sculptural form, which in turn creates visual depth. Belgrage prefers not to plan his art and instead follows his instincts. “When absorbed by the natural world, the enduring inspiration of my work, part of my experience of wonder is the contemplation of time – the way time is described, measured and held,” he said. she told My Modern Met. “It can seem frozen or captured, it can seem accelerated, dense with energy, it can seem fleeting and it can seem endless.”
Belfrage attempts to capture some of these rhythmic patterns found in nature in his glass sculptures. The lines and shapes drawn on his sculptures also cause the viewer’s eyes to move across the room, giving a sense of movement. “The rhythms of the natural world that I observe and strive to incorporate into my creation mark movement through time, evidence of life being lived, expressing growth, aging, loss, mapping and linking,” she continues.
